  • Discovering the Dorian mode
  • Learn about the Dorian mode
  • Sing a Dorian hymn
  • Study the words of the hymn, "What Wondrous Love Is This"
  • (Time permitting) Learn the modal names for major & minor scales

INSTRUMENTAL AIDS & MATERIALS
  • Piano
  • Handchimes (D to D, w/B & B)
  • Chalkboard (prepared)
  • Scriptures to be read
    • Romans 3:19-26
    • Romans 5:8-11
    • John 3:16-17

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES
  • Play tune to "What Wondrous Love"
    • Ask, "Major or minor?"
    • Sing minor scale, start w/la (D)
    • Pick someone to write scale on board, from D to D
    • Sing again, but have eight students playing handchimes
    • Replace B chime with B to "fix" scale (also fix on chalkboard)
  • Dorian Mode
    • Turn to p. 115--what's starting note?
    • Take note of no flat in key signature
    • Fa (B) becomes fi (B); remember hand sign
    • Put modified minor scale on board, using D minor w/raised B
    • Perform scale; announce "Dorian," a pentatonic scale from Re to Re; write on board (R-M-S-L-D1-R1)
    • Have someone add Fa, Ti to scale; announce this the "normal" way
    • Label half-steps (mi-fa, ti-do1)
  • Sing "What Wondrous Love Is This"
    • Half start with la, half with re
    • Notice omitted fa; sing w/hand signs
  • Study words of the hymn
    • Read aloud; have students define:
      • Lord of bliss
      • Bear the dreadful curse
      • Beneath God's righteous frown
      • Laid aside His crown
      • To God and to the Lamb
      • Thro' eternity I'll sing on
    • Read scriptures (handed out)
      • Tell choir tune was first written w/shaped notes
    • Learn Modal names (time permitting)
    • Major & minor scales are also modes: Ionian & Aeolian
    • If Lydian & Mixolydian have been covered, mention them here
